AI BYTE # 1 📢 : Huawei and HKUST Xunfei Team Up to Challenge NVIDIA and GPT-4 in AI
⭐ The Chinese AI industry is witnessing remarkable developments, thanks to the collaboration between Huawei and HKUST Xunfei, a leading AI firm.
The two companies have jointly created an AI GPU that matches the performance of NVIDIA’s A100, the most advanced AI GPU in the market.
They have also announced plans to launch a Large Language Model (LLM) that will compete with GPT-4, the next-generation AI language model.
AI GPU Breakthrough
Huawei and HKUST Xunfei have developed an AI GPU that can deliver 624 Tera Operations Per Second (TOPs) of Integer 8-bit (INT8) compute power, the same as NVIDIA’s A100.
The GPU is designed to handle the computational demands of large language models, such as GPT-3 and GPT-4, which can generate realistic text and images.
The GPU is a result of the partnership between Huawei and HKUST Xunfei, which involves sharing resources, expertise, and talent.
The GPU is expected to change the dynamics of the AI hardware market in China, where NVIDIA currently dominates.
LLM Launch
HKUST Xunfei plans to launch a novel and versatile LLM by October 24th, 2023. The LLM will be available in both Chinese and English version.
The LLM aims to rival ChatGPT, a popular AI language model that can converse with humans on various topics. ChatGPT is based on GPT-3, the most powerful AI language model to date.
The ultimate goal of HKUST Xunfei is to develop an LLM that can match or surpass GPT-4, the next-generation AI language model that is expected to be released by OpenAI in 2024.
The LLM will showcase HKUST Xunfei’s capabilities in AI software development and innovation.
Huawei’s Expanding Role in AI
Huawei is not only collaborating with HKUST Xunfei on AI hardware and software, but also developing its own AI solutions for various applications.
Huawei has partnered with iFlytek, another prominent Chinese AI firm, to create All-in-One (AIO) machines that are tailored for general-purpose AI tasks. These machines are designed to cater to the growing demand for AI solutions in various sectors.
Huawei is also a member of the China Mobile Metaverse Industry Alliance, a consortium of industry giants that are driving advancements in the AI and tech landscape.
The alliance aims to create a virtual world that integrates with the real world through technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, and VR/AR.
These developments demonstrate China’s escalating prowess in AI, as well as Huawei’s commitment to advancing AI innovation.
With Huawei and HKUST Xunfei leading the way, China’s AI industry is poised to challenge the global leaders in both hardware and software domains.

⭐ In a financial triumph, tech giant Microsoft surpassed market expectations, reporting a staggering $56.2 billion in sales and $2.69 earnings per share for the three-month period ending June 30, outshining consensus estimates of $55.5 billion in revenue and $2.55 earnings per share.
⭐ The latest quarter proved to be a game-changer for Microsoft, achieving unprecedented milestones. Notably, gross sales and net income surged to all-time highs, clocking in at $20.1 billion and marking the second-highest earnings per share in the company's history.
⭐ The company's upward trajectory remains robust, with a remarkable 21% increase in top-line revenue over the last 12 months and an 8% spike in bottom-line profits.
These figures were further accentuated by 10% growth in profits and a 6% surge in sales compared to the previous quarter.
⭐ Fueling Microsoft's success was an impressive 21% year-over-year surge in operating income within its intelligent cloud segment, boasting a considerable portion of the company's AI offerings.
This emphasis on AI-driven solutions has proven to be a driving force behind the remarkable gains.
⭐ Despite its exceptional performance, Microsoft's stock experienced a marginal dip of less than 1% following the earnings release, yet the company still boasts a remarkable nearly 50% gain year-to-date.
⭐ As the second-most valuable company globally, with a market capitalization of $2.6 trillion at the end of regular trading hours, Microsoft's valuation has soared by approximately $800 billion this year.
The surge in investor interest stems from the belief that Microsoft's strategic focus on AI will translate into substantial profits.
⭐ Microsoft's foray into the AI landscape was accentuated by a significant multibillion-dollar investment in OpenAI, the parent company of the buzzworthy AI language model ChatGPT.
Furthermore, Microsoft recently unveiled its latest AI gem, "Copilot," an innovative generative AI tool integrated across its suite of applications, aimed at generating fresh revenue streams.

⭐ If you were hoping to use OpenAI’s AI Classifier to catch your students or colleagues using ChatGPT to write their essays or reports, you’re out of luck.
The tool, which was supposed to distinguish between human and AI-written text, has been quietly shut down by its creators due to its low accuracy.
OpenAI admitted that the classifier was not fully reliable and had several limitations, such as being unreliable on short texts, incorrectly labeling human-written text as AI-written, and performing poorly outside of its training data.
This is a disappointing outcome for educators and researchers who are concerned about the ethical and academic implications of using generative AI tools like ChatGPT.
However, it also shows the challenges and complexities of developing and deploying effective provenance techniques for text.
OpenAI said it will continue to work on more effective ways to identify AI-generated content and enable users to understand if audio or visual content is AI-generated.
In the meantime, we’ll have to rely on our own human judgment and intuition to spot the difference between real and fake text.
AI BYTE # 4 📢 - Shutterstock To Partner With OpenAI.
⭐ Shutterstock, the leading provider of high-quality stock images, videos and music, has just announced a major expansion of its partnership with OpenAI, the pioneer of Artificial Intelligence research.
This means that Shutterstock will have access to the latest and greatest AI technology from OpenAI, such as DALL·E, the amazing text-to-image generator that can create anything you can imagine from a few words.
Shutterstock customers will be able to use DALL·E and other generative AI tools to create and edit stunning visuals for their projects, saving time and money while unleashing their creativity.
Shutterstock will also share its vast library of content and metadata with OpenAI, helping them train their models and make them smarter, quicker and more capable.
This is a win-win situation for both parties, as Shutterstock will also compensate its contributors for their role in training these models.
This is not the only exciting news from the AI world.
The Associated Press (AP) has also entered a two-year agreement with OpenAI to share access to select news content and technology.
This will allow OpenAI to use AP’s text archive to enhance its AI algorithms, while AP will benefit from OpenAI’s cutting-edge technology.
These partnerships show how AI is transforming the creative industry and the media landscape, offering new possibilities and opportunities for everyone involved.
Shutterstock and OpenAI are leading the way in this revolution, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.
