AI BYTE 📢: The GPT Store: A New Platform For Generative AI Innovation And Monetization
⭐ OpenAI, the AI research organization behind the popular ChatGPT chatbot, has finally launched its long-awaited GPT Store, a marketplace where users can buy and sell customized chatbot agents based on the company’s language models.
The GPT Store, which was announced in November 2023 at OpenAI’s first-ever developer conference, DevDay, is expected to foster a vibrant ecosystem of Generative AI innovation and monetization, similar to the Apple App Store and Google Play Store for mobile apps.
Gen AI is the buzzword of the year, gripping the global tech ecosystem. It refers to the ability of AI models to create content from videos to poetry out of a few simple user commands.
Leading VC Sequoia declared that Gen AI could “generate trillions of dollars of economic value,” and thousands of businesses, from Microsoft to Fiat, have raced to integrate the technology as a way to speed up productivity and deliver more value for customers.
OpenAI is regarded as one of the leading companies in the field of Gen AI, having developed several large language models, such as GPT-1, GPT-2, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4, as well as advanced image generation models, such as DALL-E and CLIP.
The company also released open-source models, such as OpenAI Codex, which can generate code from natural language, and OpenAI Five, which can play the complex video game Dota 2 at a professional level.
The GPT Store is the latest product from OpenAI that leverages its Gen AI capabilities. It allows users to create their own “GPTs” — essentially, customized versions of ChatGPT that are focused on a more narrow, discrete set of tasks, such as generating GIFs, rapidly prototyping products, or analyzing social media posts.
Users can create GPTs using a natural language chatbot-style interface, called the GPT Builder, without any coding skills. They can also add extra knowledge, instructions, and actions to their GPTs, such as accessing external APIs or data sources.
The GPT Store also enables users to share their GPTs with others, either privately or publicly, and potentially earn money from them. OpenAI said that it will pay users who build the most useful and the most used GPTs a portion of its revenue, which is reportedly more than $1.6 billion annually.
However, the revenue sharing mechanism is not ready yet, and will only be available for US builders in the first quarter of 2024. OpenAI also said that it will feature the most useful and impactful GPTs in the store, and provide a community leaderboard of popular and trending GPTs.
The GPT Store is already populated with a diverse range of GPTs developed by OpenAI’s partners and the community, covering categories such as DALL-E, writing, research, programming, education, and lifestyle.
Some of the featured GPTs include:
Personalized trail recommendations from AllTrails
Search and synthesize results from 200M academic papers with Consensus
Expand your coding skills with Khan Academy’s Code Tutor
Design presentations or social posts with Canva
Find your next read with Books
Learn math and science anytime, anywhere with the CK-12 Flexi AI tutor
The GPT Store is a significant step in OpenAI’s evolution from an AI model provider to a platform, as it opens up new possibilities for AI development and usage.
OpenAI said that it has also established a new review system, in addition to the existing safety measures, to ensure that the GPTs adhere to its policies. Users are also able to report GPTs that violate the policies or cause harm.
The GPT Store is currently only available for ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users, but OpenAI plans to offer it to more users soon. You can explore the GPT Store at chat.openai.com/gpts, and create your own GPT at chat.openai.com/create.
